February Presentation Meeting

February’s presentation meeting will be held on Thursday, February 28. Socializing will begin around 6:30pm with the presentation beginning promptly at 7:30pm.

The presentation will be given by John Gendron, NJ4Z. The topic is

John is an avid DX’er. In his presentation, John will cover proper etiquette for working DX, tips and tricks to get through to those rare DX stations, and how to FIND those DX contacts that you still need. Additionally, John will relay his first hand knowledge of operating from a DX location as well as planning and executing a DX-pedition. This should be a fantastic meeting, for sure! Hope to see as many folks as possible attend.

Winter Field Day 2019

Winter Field Day has come and gone. A HUGE thanks to all of our members who came out and offered their support.

Setup began on Friday morning. We operated for about 20 hours, with only a break during the overnight period when the bands were all dead.

It was a great time had by all! Thanks for making Winter Field Day such a huge success this year!

You can find a few pictures from the fun here.

YCARS Welcomes York County ARES

YCARS opened their door to the new York County ARES organization on Thursday, January 17. 14 area Amateurs who have already joined, or who have since joined ARES were in attendance.

York County ARES has been hard at work since being formed just a few months ago. They have been holding weekly ARES nets, each Monday at 9pm, on the KD4EOD repeater. Net manager is Steve, W3SPC.

John, NJ4Z and Steve, W3SPC, have met with leadership for York County Communications and York County Emergency Management. They are working to define the primary and secondary roles that ARES will play in auxiliary and emergency communications to support York County.

YC ARES has met with numerous public service organizations, including DHEC and the Red Cross, and are currently defining ARES roles and responsibilities in those organizations emergency communications plans.

A tactical communications plan is currently being developed. This plan will outline the standard operating procedures if a disaster strikes our area.

YCARS Represented at VOAD

YCARS and York County ARES were invited to participate in the Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster meeting in Rock Hill on January 15.

Amateur Radio was warmly welcomed at this event. Both YCARS and YC ARES made numerous contacts and received numerous requests from community organizations for our assistance. Participants included DHEC, The Red Cross, and others.

Good things coming soon in our community! Stay tuned for multiple volunteer opportunities.

Winter Field Day – January 26 – 27

YCARS will be participating in Winter Field Day. The event will run Saturday, January 26, at 2pm through Sunday, January 27, at 2pm.

The purpose of Winter Field Day is to foster Ham camaraderie, field operation, emergency operating preparedness, and just plain on the air, indoor and outdoor fun in the midst of winter for American, Canadian and DX Amateurs. Don’t let those winter doldrums keep you locked up in the house… get out and play some radio!!

We will run three operating stations from the YCARS clubhouse. We will have a dedicated SSB station, a dedicated CW station, and a third station which will be used for a mix of phone and digital modes.

YCARS won our class in SC during Summer Field Day 2018. We are optimistic that we can perform exceptionally well in Winter Field Day this year!

John Gendron, NJ4Z, is coordinating SSB operations. Darcy Pach, K4DQP is leading digital operations. Andy Kunik, AE8J, is coordinating CW operations. If you would like to participate, please reach out to one of them for timeslots that we are in need of filling.

Come by and say hi and support the operators and/or operate or log! We’d love to see as many club members as possible participate.

The clubhouse will be open to the public during this event for anyone who would like to stop by, learn about the club, meet YCARS members, and learn more about ham radio.
